New farm safety guide released

Workplace health and safety information publisher Pro-Visual Publishing has released the latest edition of its broadacre farm safety guide highlighting the importance of safe practices on the farm.

Broadacre Farm Safety Guide 201415

The Broadacre Guide to Farm Safety 2014/15 wall-mounted chart is published with support from RuralSafe and is distributed free of charge to farming operations nationwide.

A highlight of this year’s guide is ways to correctly handle dangerous goods and hazardous chemical on the farm. It explains ways to conduct a Workplace Risk Assessment and safety control methods to implement when working with such items.

Another prominent safety concern on farms is the handling and operation of heavy farm machinery like tractors and combine harvesters, which is discussed at length in the guide. The chart lists safety precautions to take when working with such machines including keeping all guards in place at all times and using a tyre safety cage when inflating tyres.

The guide also highlights the importance of safety awareness when working in and around the big machines as injuries and fatalities often result from lack of awareness.

Silo and auger safety is also addressed, as well as precautions to take when manually handling items on the farm which involves physical strength such as lifting, pulling and carrying.
