Young innovative farmers urged to step up and be heard

Nominations for the sixth annual Young Farmer of the Year award are closing soon and sponsor Case IH is urging innovative young workers on the land to put themselves forward for the accolade.

Case IH brand leader Bruce Healey says it is important to put the spotlight on young, innovative producers in agriculture.

“As members of the agriculture industry, it’s important that we tell positive stories about farming, and young people in our industry must be recognised for the role they play in raising the bar for future generations,” he says.

“We are looking for young farmers who are planning for the future, not just on their own farms, but helping others – young and old- to improve their farming practices an increase productivity.”

Speaking on last year’s winner Jack England who’s a fifth generation farmer from Kingston in South Australia, Healey says it was his enthusiasm and eagerness to adapt that made him stand out.

“Jack’s scientific approach to all aspects of farming has lifted production and profitability on the South Australian property,” Healey says.

“He readily shares the benefits of his experience, whether in cost savings, animal welfare improvements or productivity, with diverse research activities and directorial roles at Livestock SA and South Australia Farmers Federation.”

The Young Farmer of the Year award is open to farmers aged between 18 to 35 who demonstrate a highly professional, innovative and sustainable approach to their enterprise. They should demonstrate good knowledge of workplace health and safety, sustainability and an interest in technology to help improve productivity.

Nominations and applications for the 2015 Young Farmer of the Year award closes on Friday June 26. The award will be handed out on September 9 at The InterContinental Sydney.
