After introducing it at Agritechnica 2019, Massey Ferguson has formally launched its new MF 8S Series of tractors, following seven years of testing around the globe.

Speaking at the company’s online product launch, Massey Ferguson vice president and managing director for Europe and the Middle East Thierry Lhotte says the product marks the start of a new era for the brand.

“This is the start of the beginning,” he says.

“The Festival of new products is not far from this one.”

The four models in the MF 8S tractor range vary in power from 205 horsepower to 265hp, all built on a 3.05m wheelbase, and each with Engine Power Management (EPM) providing an extra 20hp for transport, PTO and hydraulic applications.

The 6-cylinder, 7.4 litre engines generate maximum power at 1,000 rpm and it is constant up to 1,500 rpm – providing high performance at low engine speeds that cuts fuel consumption by 10 per cent and noise by up to six decibels.

Its All-In-One integrated Selected Catalytic Reduction (SCR) with a Soot Catalyst (SC) is fully integrated, meaning no Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) or complex Variable Geometry Turbocharger is needed.

Mounted outside the tractor and designed to last its lifetime, the compact unit ensures the exhaust pipe is slimmer than before and visibility remains unimpeded, Massey Ferguson says.

High performance and efficiency

Its transmission options include the Dyna E-Power, Dual Clutch gearbox, which MF says combines the advantages of a continuously variable transmission (CVT) with the ability to transmit power as efficiently as a mechanical transmission.

Offering four ranges with seven gears, the Dyna E-Power reduces power losses by up to 26 per cent at higher speeds when compared with the previous MF 7700 S Dyna-6, which the company says helps deliver up to 10 per cent of fuel savings.

The tractors can also achieve top speeds at low rpm – 50km/h at 1,500rpm and 40km/h at 1,200rpm – further improving fuel efficiency and reducing noise.

The other option is the new Dyna-7 semi powershift gearbox, which MF says is about 10 per cent more efficient than the Dyna-6 – with one extra powershift gear and a total of 28 forward and reverse speeds in four ranges and seven seamless gears.

The tractors retain the well-proven standard suspended front axle, offering a tight, 5.7m turning radius, with four speed power take off as standard.

Its three-point linkage capacity is increased by 7 per cent to 10,000kg thanks to powerful new hydraulics, while a new 4,800kg capacity front linkage option, fully integrated into the tractor, comes with the option of an ISOBUS socket.

All ISOBUS compatible implements can be run from the tractor’s Datatronic5 touch screen terminal, while a new antenna rail as standard helps for easy mounting of GPS receivers.

All models in the MF 8S range come with a three-year subscription to MF Connect Telemetry, which uses mobile data to transfer data to the cloud for easy access, while an optional Fieldstar 5 terminal can manage other MF technologies.

This can be run from within the cabin alongside the MF vDisplay terminal fitted to the right pillar – which replaces the dashboard in the tractor cab.

With a 6.6 square metre glass area, the 8S offers great visibility

Grand Designs

Measuring 3.4 cubic metres in volume, the new cab is protected from noise by its “Protect-U” design, placing a 24cm gap between the cab and the engine – a move MF says reduces heat, noise and vibrations while also making radiators more accessible.

The tractor cabin has a 6.6 square metre glass area and, with the MF vDisplay system, leaves just the steering wheel and Power Control lever in front of the driver.

The new Control Centre armrest is fitted with the latest easy-to-use MultiPad lever provides complete fingertip control. This ISOBUS compatible lever operates all the tractor functions and includes an integral micro-joystick to control two spool valves.

A real leather option is available for the seat, which Massey Ferguson says is now auto-air suspended, heated, ventilated and equipped with lateral damping – though it also has air-conditioning supplied through 14 different outlets.

And finally the new MF 8S also sports a new ‘neo-retro’ design that pays tribute to the brand’s heritage – with the company including the MF grey sabre stripe on the side and horse head collar motif on the bonnet, which dates back to the MF 100 series.
