BTS 19: HVIA delivers for industry

The HVIA’s objective is to positively influence the development and maintenance of policy, legislation, regulation and technical standards

HVIA, organiser of the Brisbane Truck Show, represents and advances the interests of Australian manufacturers and suppliers of heavy vehicles and their components, equipment and technology.

Its objective is to influence development and maintenance of policy, legislation, regulation and technical standards.

Australia’s heavy-vehicle industry directly employs more than 36,000 people, and manufactures, services and repairs some of the world’s most efficient, safe, innovative and technologically advanced vehicles.

Australia is a world leader in many aspects of heavy-vehicle transport. It has a thriving local industry that comprises hundreds of innovative trailer, specialised vehicle, component, equipment and technology manufacturers and suppliers, in addition to the assembly of global heavy-vehicle brands such as Volvo, Mack, Kenworth and Iveco.

The increasing pace of technological change presents substantial challenges to industry and to regulators. There is also a significant focus on innovation and regulatory reforms to support the performance of the Australian economy into the future.

DELIVERING FOR INDUSTRY

HVIA is committed to providing leading advice and assistance to its members and directing and influencing policy at all levels of government with a commitment to delivering the best possible outcomes for its members, the wider industry and the community.

The industry group was formed in October 2015, largely in response to the advent of the Heavy Vehicle National Law and the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator and the clear need for a strong, unified voice representing the entire heavy-vehicle industry.

With offices and staff located around the country, HVIA is well resourced to deliver four key work programs: advocacy; member services; workforce development; and national events.

ADVOCACY

HVIA’s objective is to positively influence the development and maintenance of policy, legislation, regulation and technical standards, creating an environment that fosters innovation and contributes to the future viability of the heavy-vehicle industry, and the safety and productivity of the heavy-vehicle fleet.

HVIA sits on key national regulatory consultative committees and working groups, including: National Heavy Vehicle Regulator Industry Reference Forum; National Transport Commission Industry Advisory Group; Department of Infrastructure Regional Development Strategic Vehicle Safety and Environment Group; and Standards Australia ME-053 Committee, Heavy Road Vehicles.

MEMBER SERVICES

HVIA’s objective is to deliver critical information, support, relationship building, business development and industry best practice.

Hotline services TechASSIST and EmployerASSIST have been developed to provide invaluable, accurate and informative technical, regulatory, HR and IR advice to member businesses.

HVIA’s regional managers, based in Brisbane, Perth and Melbourne, facilitate regular information sessions and networking events, and provide opportunities to contribute at local meetings of HVIA’s policy councils.

Through participation on the HVIA’s state committees, members are kept abreast of technical and regulatory issues, and play an active role in the development of HVIA policy.

The HVIA National Service Managers’ Council operates in a similar way, with members discussing, reviewing, and developing policy on matters relating to workshop practices and workforce development.

WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT

HVIA’s objective is to secure a highly-skilled workforce to ensure the industry’s viability and capacity to deliver innovation.

Through participation on the Commonwealth Government Heavy Vehicle Industry Reference Committee, HVIA plays a role in developing policy and the oversight of national training package development.

Other key initiatives that promote careers within the industry include the: Schools to Industry Tours program; HVIA Jobs Hub at the Brisbane Truck Show; promoting industry careers at school career expos and with targeted presentations; National Apprentice Challenge at the Brisbane Truck Show; and HVIA National Apprentice of the Year Awards.

NATIONAL EVENTS

HVIA’s objective is to host world-class events that deliver value, foster innovation, and showcase and promote the latest heavy vehicles and their components.

The biennial Brisbane Truck Show, organised by industry for industry since 1968, is the premier event in Australasia for the transport industry.

The event creates the equivalent of 269 full-time employment positions and adds additional expenditure of more than $70 million in output into the economy.

ComVec is Australia’s leading heavy-vehicle engineering conference, held over two days in HVIA’s southern region on the alternate year. ComVec provides a forum for industry and government representatives to collaborate and discuss critical information on: future technology; innovation; government policy; and vehicle standards and regulations.

The 2019 Brisbane Truck Show will be held at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre from Thursday, May 16 to Sunday, May 19, 2019. To secure your ticket – and go into the draw to win a Toyota HiLux Rugged X – click here!
