BTS21: AHVI Week Bigger and Better

Australian Heavy Vehicle Industry Week brings the trucking industry out of the Convention and Exhibition Centre and into the South Bank of Brisbane

The launch of Australian Heavy Vehicle Industry (AHVI) Week as its umbrella event formalised something that has been happening for years alongside the Brisbane Truck Show.

HVIA chief executive Todd Hacking explains that exhibitors have long been holding launch events, customer dinners, dealer conferences, drive days, factory tours and much more in tandem with the Truck Show.

“The reaction to the expansion into South Bank Parklands was fantastic,” Hacking says of 2019’s bigger show presence outside of the exhibition centre.

“All of that success is a reflection on the leadership shown by so many of our exhibitors, who did such an amazing job of showcasing the values of their companies and our industry to the broader community.”

The week of events and the communication campaign around it foster broader community awareness about the heavy vehicle industry’s vital role and positive impact within the community.

With the support of Tourism and Events Queensland, Brisbane City Council and South Bank Corporation, Little Stanley Street and Stanley Street Plaza will be closed to traffic to showcase innovative trucks and trailers.

Following AHVI Week’s success in 2019, the South Bank precinct has grown into a full-fledged festival, with an abundance of activities and entertainment, all supported by the precinct’s retailers waiting to welcome visitors with a plethora of great dining options.

“The opportunity to showcase our industry in this spectacular location provides the perfect opportunity to share our story with the community in a tangible and lasting way,” Hacking says.

“We are extremely grateful to the Queensland Government and the City of Brisbane for coming on board to enable this initiative to come to life.”

PLACE TO BE

The intent behind AHVI Week broadly supports the government’s agenda across a wide range of strategic priorities, including promoting Queensland as a major hub for Australia’s vibrant and innovative heavy vehicle manufacturing industry.

The recent launch of MaxiTrans’ new heavy-duty trailer manufacturing facility in Carole Park is just one prime example of the industry’s health and willingness to invest in advanced facilities.

The Queensland Government partnership also utilises the Brisbane Truck Show to promote road safety and workplace safety across many sectors, including manufacturing, service centres, construction, agriculture and road transport.

AHVI Week includes a full schedule of events within the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre (BCEC).

The opening morning of the Brisbane Truck Show features the Manufacturers Media Tour, attracting leading automotive, industry and mainstream journalists to witness the
highly-anticipated unveiling of many new trucks, trailers and equipment.

The expanded Technology and Innovation Centre and Future Fuels and Sustainability Hub are both set to provide a picture of where the industry is heading over the rest of this decade and beyond.

Beyond the walls of the BCEC, the Jobs Hub and the HVIA National Apprentice Challenge will showcase career opportunities to the broader community, with free entry at the South Bank Piazza amphitheatre.

Hacking says that the heavy vehicle industry offers diverse and rewarding career paths.

“With hundreds of jobs available directly from Jobs Hub exhibitors, this will open doors to young people just entering the workforce and others considering something new,” he explains.

Sunday is when families are most obvious at the Brisbane Truck Show. While the exhibitors count the business cards and order forms from the previous three days, they are just as keen to welcome the mums and dads, small business people – and their kids – potentially the next generation of heavy vehicle industry talent.

Meanwhile, away from the convention centre, there will be full hotels all across Brisbane; there will be dealer conferences, association meetings, large and small customer dinners and events held across Brisbane every night before and during the Brisbane Truck Show.

The new Civil Construction Field Days sees a welcome return for heavy equipment and machinery, just a short shuttle away at Hamilton Northshore, with reciprocal tickets for both events.

AHVI Week celebrates our thriving and robust local industry – a world leader in many aspects of heavy vehicle transport.

Hacking says that the week is about expressing pride in the heavy vehicle industry while starting a conversation with the broader community about its innovation, local manufacturing and sustainability; about road safety, skills development, education and careers.

“We encourage every participant to fully embrace the opportunities that the Australian Heavy Vehicle Industry Week offers and to be a part of sharing our great story,” he says.
