The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) is looking forward to catching up with drivers, operators and executives at this year’s Brisbane Truck Show, to reflect on the challenges of 2020 and discuss future safety and productivity opportunities
“The Truck Show is always a great opportunity for us to connect with the heavy vehicle industry,” NHVR CEO Sal Petroccitto says.
“And this year there’s a lot to talk about, with the Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL) under review and new technology changing the way we work.

The NHVR has recently proposed a number of changes to the HVNL, which is being reviewed by the National Transport Commission.
“The law should be simpler and more flexible, with rules that support operators that invest in safety and manage risk,” Petroccitto says.
“We also want to make it easier for the industry to introduce and operate more performance-based standards (PBS) vehicles, including moving mature designs to the prescriptive fleet and streamlining approval processes.”

Fatigue management is another key topic for drivers, operators and the broader supply chain when meeting with the NHVR.
“We know fatigue distraction detection technology (FDDT) is a game changer in better managing individual driver fatigue, which is why we’re leading an FDDT pilot involving 12 operators,” Petroccitto explains.
“We’re also encouraging drivers and operators to use NHVR-approved electronic work diaries, which enable drivers to record their work hours at the touch of a button, rather than spending time ruling lines and counting multiple time periods on pieces of paper.”
Petroccitto says that NHVR staff will also be running fatigue choices sessions throughout the Truck Show to highlight the flexibility on offer to help operators and drivers manage their fatigue outcomes.
“If you want to take part, just talk to the NHVR team on the exhibition floor and arrange a session,” he adds.
“We’ll also have experts on site to address a range of topics including access permits, vehicle standards, Chain of Responsibility, accreditation, PBS and more.
“We want to hear your thoughts and ideas about how we can help create a safer, more productive industry for everyone.
