More than 25 years on, a Walco spreader is still consistently getting the job done for one dairy farmer
In an industry where machinery is often replaced every few years, one farmer is proving that quality equipment can still stand the test of time.
It was back in October 2000 that a Walco 350 ATV spreader was delivered to dairy farmer Brian Schnell.
At the time, the Walco spreader was still fairly new to the market, but it quickly stood out for its practical design, robust construction and strong warranty support.
More than 25 years later, the same spreader is still being used on the same farm today.
Over the years, the machine has been extensively used for spreading urea and fertiliser between bulk spreading, along with magnesium powder and seed applications.
While Brian still works on the farm, the operation has since been handed on to the next generation.
Brian’s son-in-law, Greg Gemmell, says the spreader has continued to prove its value over time, even as the farm has modernised around it.
Around 10 years ago, the farm installed robotic milking machines to improve efficiency and keep pace with technology, but the Walco spreader still remains part of the farming operation today.
“I would tell anybody that the Walco is worth the investment because it’s built tough and lasts for decades,” Greg says.
“It has proven to be a reliable and dependable piece of farm equipment rather than something you replace every few years.
“Even the parts on our 25 year old machine are original. It is a sturdy machine, not top heavy, good for hills, and feels very sturdy when towed behind an ATV.”

For many farmers, long term durability and reliability remain key factors when investing in farm machinery, particularly when equipment is expected to handle demanding conditions year after year.
The Walco spreader range available in Australia includes ATV spreaders, trailed spreaders and PTO driven tractor spreaders designed for fertiliser, seed and magnesium powder applications across a wide range of farming operations.
Current Australian models include:
• Walco ATV Spreader 350L SD

• Walco PTO Spreader 675L
Across the range, Walco spreaders feature UV and corrosion resistant polyethylene hoppers and guards, hot dip galvanised frames, stainless steel shutters, extra gearbox bearings and simple drive systems designed for long term farm use in demanding conditions.
Walco spreaders are manufactured by RGL alongside the Redback Agri range of farm machinery products, including harrows, weedwipers and arena groomers, all of which can be purchased directly online through Redback Agri Australia.
Selected Walco spreaders, along with the Redback Agri range of weedwipers, harrows and arena groomers, will be on display at FarmFest near Toowoomba in June at Site L-16.
