Video: Tractor drifting!

Who doesn’t love a cheeky burnout video? This one from GoPro has a bit of a twist to it though — the drift machine in question is a 1956 Volvo BM Terrier tractor.

We don’t imagine that the Swedish engineers and designers back in the early ’50s would have envisaged that their tractor would be used in this particular niche but, that said, it is pretty darn cool.

Obviously the old Volvo wasn’t capable of doing this from the factory; there have been quite a few modifications that tractor owner and driver Filip Lindquist and the team at Viano tyres have made to the old girl.

The guys at Viano first set about extending the frame by 18cm, and then they welded in a roll cage, reinforced the front suspension and replaced the original diesel engine with a Volvo 940 turbo motor which incorporated a Volvo 240 head and a Volvo 740 intercooler.

Throw in a couple more goodies and increase the turbo boost to .075 bar and you’ve got a 62-year-old tractor that can pump out 170kW at the wheels and eviscerate its rear tyres quicker than you can say ‘Holy tractor!’
