Tasmania’s government is seeking feedback on its roadmap for small-scale livestock processing facilities
Tasmanian producers have the opportunity to contribute to a guidance document and roadmap for new livestock processing facilities in the state.
The document was first drafted in response to a petition received by the Premier last year and aims to outline the approval and permits needed for small-scale meat processors to get started and maintain business.
“The guidance document provides an overview for business planning, regulatory requirements and practical advice to producers who may want to establish micro or mobile processing facilities for red meat or pigs,” the Tasmanian government says.
A working group including representatives from the petitioner, TasFarmers, Southern Tasmanian Association of Meat Processors, Sprout Tasmania, government and other industry bodies developed the guidance document and road map.
Tasmanian minister for primary industries and water Gavin Pearce says this roadmap will help to provide clarity about how these facilities can be established and operated.
“We know just how important our smaller livestock producers are to our local agrifood sector and paddock-to-plate brand,” he says.
“This is about streamlining and simplifying to make life easier for our farmers, all while maintaining Tasmania’s strong reputation for food safety and environmental protection.
“We are delivering for producers who say they want to see more localised processing options that fit smaller business models, and we want to make it as easy as possible for that to happen.
“The draft roadmap brings together information from multiple regulators into one clear, practical resource, helping both new and existing operators understand what’s required, who to talk to, and how to get their projects up and running.”
