Honda will replace the smallest side-by-side in its line-up with a new model, equipped with a larger engine and cargo bed but keeping its narrow width
A new Honda side-by-side with a more powerful engine and improved cargo bed will make its Australian debut in 2021.
It is understood the Honda Pioneer 520, which will replace the Pioneer 500 in the company’s side-by-side line-up, will arrive down under in the second quarter of 2021 – though this date is yet to be confirmed.
Honda MPE Australia general manager of motorcycles Tony Hinton says the 500 had proven that a compact unit could have an impressive performance.
“For 2021, the Pioneer 520 features a larger engine and a dump bed, but it retains the 1270mm width and 1855mm wheelbase that have made it so popular,” he says.
“Whether customers are looking for an entry-level side-by-side, moving from an ATV, or just seeking a vehicle that can work hard without taking up a lot of room, the Pioneer 520 should be at the top of their list.”

Like the Pioneer 500, the 520 is 1270mm wide, allowing the vehicle to drive in narrow space and even be loaded onto the bed of some utes, while its 217mm ground clearance height is great for uneven terrain.
Among the changes Honda has made to the new model is a 518cc displacement engine – 43cc larger than the 500 and the largest in its class – with improved shock damping and front and rear suspension.
Honda says the engine is the same used in its TRX250 series, but tuned for a side-by-side application and with a wider bore which it says helps offer an increased low-to-midrange power and torque.
Power is fed directly to front and rear driveshafts, with no belt drive to maintain, and the air cleaner and battery box are easily accessed by lifting the bed.
The Pioneer 520 has a five-speed transmission with automatic and manual modes, and two and four wheel drive are selectable on-the-fly via an easy-to-reach dash-mounted knob.
Measuring 658mm x 983mm x 249mm, the new 204kg capacity cargo bed has D-ring anchors and cut-outs to accept multiple objects, and has 10 latches to accept Honda Pro-Connect accessories, including racks, cargo boxes and more.
Its towing capacity is 454kg.
