The focus will be on onsite traffic management and pedestrian safety in the construction, manufacturing, transport and agriculture industries, where there are forklifts, elevating work platforms, order pickers, earthmoving equipment and cranes.

The inspections aim to reduce the rate of fatalities and severity of injuries involving people being hit by mobile plant and vehicles at Queensland workplaces.

WHSQ inspectors will visit workplaces to raise awareness of the risks and help them implement effective traffic management strategies. They may contact businesses prior to visiting, or simply arrive unannounced.

Worksite assessments will occur in three phases: between now and September this year; between February and April next year; and again between August and September next year.

Managers are encouraged to do their homework the on the rules around workplace traffic management, and to ensure they have effective and up-to-date traffic management strategies in place.

One pf the best ways to identify hazards, according to WHSQ, is to ask your workers and visiting drivers about traffic management problems they encounter at your workplace.

As a general rule, a person conducting a business must ensure that workers and other people are not exposed to health and safety risks as a result of their business operations.

A person conducting a business with powered mobile plant must ensure it does not collide with pedestrians or other equipment.

If there is a possibility of collision, the plant must have a warning device alerting persons who may be at risk from its movement.

Reasonable steps must also be taken to ensure the business has, and uses, processes to eliminate or minimise risks from traffic.
