New side tipper technology to debut at ITTES

A new side tipper technology which utilises a truck’s air compressor for operation will make its first public appearance at the International Truck, Trailer and Equipment Show (ITTES) in Melbourne next week.

Air Tip, the company which designed and built the system says the trailer is great for use in industries where bulk material transport is required such as agriculture, mining quarry work and construction.

The system was a result of three years of research and development and can be used on any prime mover.

The Air Tip trailer uses the infrastructure already available on the prime mover- the air compressor to charge and tip the trailers.

A point of difference on Air Tip compared to other systems in the market, according to its inventor Clarke Petrick, is Air Tip’s ability to unload up to three trailers at the same time.

The Air Tip trailer uses the same airlines as a standard trailer and takes approximately five minutes to charge the trailers for tipping.

Air Tip’s bin and chassis have been integrated into one super strong unit with a monocoque design to save on overall weight and add strength to the system.

Unlike other systems, Air Tip does not require PTO, a hydraulic pump or the subsequent oil tank to operate the tipping mechanism. The result, the company says, is much lower set up costs; maintenance costs and with the tare weight reduced, greater payload for operators.

“Initial savings include the price of a PTO for the truck and the costs in getting it and the oil tank fitted, which is approximately $12,000,” Petick says.

“Then you add in the maintenance savings of a hydraulic fitter of approximately $5000 a year. A one tonne additional pay load will lead to significant savings.”

Petrick adds another plus to the system is no possibility of a hydraulic spill thus preventing environmental damage.

With an operating pressure of just 100psi compared to 2000psi on other tipping systems, Pertick says the system is very safe for use.

The system cannot be retrofitted to existing side tippers.

Pertick says the company is manufacturing the bins in Australia and is determined to keep it that way.

“We are keeping our manufacturing arm in Australia to be close to the operators working in our extremely harsh and demanding conditions so we can develop a product fit for the purpose,” he says.

Air Tip’s new trailer tipping system will be on display at the company’s stand at the ITTES- TSL10 on the Town Square Lawn at the Melbourne Showgrounds where the event will be held.

The International Truck, Trailer and Equipment Show will run from April 3 to 6. Find out more details on the show here
