Massey Ferguson Global Series utility tractors feature “clean sheet” design

Tractor giant Massey Ferguson has launched its newest series of mid-range work horses which the company says has been designed from the ground up to cater to a wide scope of farming applications.

The Global Series, with power ranging from 60hp to 82hp, was officially released to the market at Massey Ferguson’s “Vision of the Future” expo held at the Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Centre this week.

AGCO ramps up global strategy

The MF2709, MF4707 and MF4708 are the first models to be made available in a line-up Massey Ferguson says will eventually offer three ranges, four different transmissions and will come with either footstep, semi-platform or cab versions.

According to Massey Ferguson, more than 90 per cent of the parts and components in the Global Series are entirely new and have been designed specifically for the new range. This includes the gearbox and the hydraulic system.

Massey Ferguson Australia Marketing Director Simon Hole says the state-of-the-art tractors are a result of a AUD $375 million investment in a completely new, clean sheet design.

“They are developed specifically to provide utterly dependable operation in a wide range of applications to meet the needs of a diverse range of farmers worldwide,” he says.

He adds the series has been built with the latest technology for modern applications but still features Massey Ferguson’s traditional straightforward operation, dependability and value for money.

“In addition, we have sought where possible to use existing design technology and components from our recently successful ranges, which are not only specially developed for the modern era, they allow us to provide local parts and service most efficiently across our whole range of tractors, wherever they are in the world,” he says.

Powerful engines

The Global Series carries AGCO’s own power units offering high torque and fuel efficiency:

  • MF2706- 62hp 2 cylinder naturally aspirated engine
  • MF4707- 74hp AGCO POWER 3.3 litre, three cylinder turbocharged engine
  • MF4708-82hp AGCO POWER 4.4 litre, four cylinder turbocharged Tier 2 mechanical fuel injected engine

Brand new transmission

Massey Ferguson engineers at Beauvais, France have developed a completely new transmission with synchronised mechanical reverse shuttle for the Global Series.

The gearbox’s modern constant mesh, sliding collar design features specially designed gears with a high contact ratio for strength and durability.

Unlike helical gears, the straight gears don’t require thrust bearings to support the sideloads, which Massey Ferguson says makes them not only more durable but easier to service.

The MF2706 gearbox has eight forward/reverse speeds while the two MF4700 series models offer a 12 forward/reverse speed gearbox.

Hydraulic power

A brand new open-centre hydraulic power has been designed specifically for the Global Series, which Massey Fegruson says more than meets the flow and pressure demands for modern applications and implements.

This employs a responsive, high pressure gear pump to supply the main services including rear linkage and auxiliary spool valves, while another pump provides lower pressure for the auxiliary hydraulic circuits including the steering, 4WD and diff-lock engagement as well as PTO control.

Bells and whistles

In addition to the revolutionary new design and technology, Massey Ferguson also features on its Global Series:

  • Robust rear axle with new inboard reduction units and oil-immmersed brakes
  • Choice of 2WD or 4WD front axles with hydrostatic steering for excellent manevrability and traction
  • Responsive electronic hitch control with straightforward level operation. The MF 4700 units offer a maximum 3,000kg rear linkage lift capacity while the MF2706 offers up to 2,000kg .
  • 540rpm speed independent PTO with three-position rocker switch for easy operation
  • Rear-pivoting bonnet for easy access and maintenance. The dipstick is positioned to the right with the cooling package and battery placed at the front for easy cleaning and servicing.
  • Ergonomic controls with an analogue instrument panel providing information on engine speed, fuel level and temperature as well as housing the warning lights for 4WD, PTO, diff-lock and other functions. A digital display shows PTO speed, engine hours an forward speed.

Stay tuned for the specifications coming soon.
