A new automated calf feeding system dubbed the Lely Calm Control was launched in Australia this month.

The Lely Calm Control has been designed to supply calves with the exact amount of milk they need, at the correct intervals and at the correct temperature to help calves to grow and develop into profitable dairy cows.

Its functions can be controlled with a new online management system, which makes it easier to monitor calf performance and identify health disorders at an early stage, according to Lely.

The management system gives you access to current weight information and weight gain per calf, and also gives you a warning when the drinking rate is too low, or if the drinking process is frequently interrupted, which can lead to impaired calf health.

The automated feeder uses behavioural-recognition technology to recognise which calf wants to drink.

There is a button for young calves to learn to drink from the automated feeder and an integrated LED light that indicates the status of the drinking process.

Livestock farm managers who already have an existing Lely Calm machine can use an update kit to bring their model up to speed.
