McCormack designs rear-mounted cotton loader

Queensland-based McCormack Industries has come up with a new way to handle round cotton modules with the invention of the Cotton Tag Trailer.

The company says the new trailer design has many advantages over traditional designs which connect to the three-point linkage of the tractor. Because the unit is towed from the rear, the tractor is always travelling forwards, which the firm says reduces tractor wear and operator fatigue.

The unit uses a grabbing-mechanism to collect bales and lift them onto the trailer. The modules are unloaded ‘sausage style’ which means they can be loaded onto chain-bed trucks or conventionally onto flat-bed trailers.

Once three modules have been collected the trailer uses a chain-driven bed and tipping chassis to unload the modules.

This method of unloading gives the operator full control over the modules as they are unloading, which, according to McCormack Industries, increases safety, allows the operator to unload the modules in groups of six that can then be collected by chain-bed trucks.

The trailer has cab-mounted controls that can also be configured to work via the tractor’s remote controls.

The ability to collect three modules on each trip may reduce time spent in the paddock, and operator visibility is likely to be increased since the driver has an unobscured, full-frontal view.
